Asbestos is a commercial name used for silicate minerals capable of forming long, thin fibers. Materials formed in this way have proven effective as thermal insulators and were often used as part of fire protection in buildings.

Main types of asbestos

• Chrysotile (white asbestos), belonging to the serpentine group
• Amosite (brown asbestos), belonging to the amphibole group—this group also includes crocidolite, anthophyllite, actinolite, and tremolite
